Cheese & Wine Pairing

Give me a good sharp knife and a good sharp cheese and I’m a happy man.
— George R. R. Martin

Years in the making and maturation, carefully created by skilled artisans and craftsmen, terroir-driven and evoking a distinct sense of place… similarities shared by two of our favourite things – cheese and wine.

A ubiquitous duo, cheese and wine are also as different as, well… you get the idea. Cheese with its high fat content and wine with its acidity. Opposites attract to deliver outstanding flavour combinations, but surely not ALL wine pairs with ALL cheese?

We’ve done the hard work in taste-testing and found our four favourite cheeses to pair with Artelium wines. Try them out and let us know what you think.

Baked Tunworth & Curators Cuvée 2014

The saying goes, “what grows together, goes together” and our Curators Cuvée 2014 is made from grapes grown in Hampshire, just 10 minutes down the road from where the gorgeous Tunworth cheese is made.

Tunworth, a soft, white-rinded cheese made entirely by hand. The finished cheese has a rich and earthy porcini fragrance and a long-lasting sweet, nutty flavour.  These fantastic flavours pair perfectly with the yeast and fruit flavours in our Curators Cuvée. Aged for over 60 months on the lees, this wine has the depth and maturity to compliment baking this cheese and topping it with honey and walnuts – a team favourite at our tasting room!

Mozzarella & Pinot Gris 2020

Like often goes with like, when it comes to texture and flavour – so a young, fresh cheese such as mozzarella pairs best with a young, fresh, dry white, such as our Pinot Gris 2020.

The bright notes of white peach and orange zest in our Pinot Gris contrasts beautifully with the delicate lactic notes of the mozzarella. We think that the two come together in perfect harmony when enjoyed as a pizza laden with gooey mozzarella and a crisp glass of Pinot Gris. To try this combo yourself – why not book into our Pizza Night here.

Comté & Artefact #3 Barrel Aged White Pinot Noir 2020

That said, sometimes “opposites attract”, in which case we love a rich and nutty Comté with our floral, aromatic, and complex White Pinot Noir.

Our limited release, Barrel Aged White Pinot boasts cherry and white peach aromas with a touch of almond on the palate. This complex and versatile fruit-forward wine therefore matches well with a nutty Comté, without one flavour overpowering the other. The complexity of this pairing will keep any wine and cheese fanatic happy.

Saint George Goat’s Camembert & Blanc de Noirs 2014

The creamy and sometimes salty flavours of this Goat’s cheese compliment the juicy pear and crunchy red apple palate of our 2014 Blanc de Noirs.

Winner of Britain’s best goats’ cheese for the BBC2 Full on Food programme, this Camembert style goats cheese is luscious and creamy with faint mushroom aromas. The umami qualities afforded from cellar ageing our Blanc de Noirs contrast beautifully with the light buttery texture of this cheese. Enjoy this very moreish pairing as part of a charcuterie board at our tasting room.

Make sure to stop by the cellar door to try our wines paired with stunning local Sussex cheeses. Book your visit here.
