Sussex Mulled Wine Recipe

Following popular demand, here is our Mulled Pinot Noir recipe that we serve at our Christmas Makers Markets.

It’s not Christmas until you have had your first glass of Mulled Wine. This warm, spiced drink was first recorded in England in a medieval cookery book dating from 1380 and has been a festive favourite ever since.

For centuries the Red Wine was shipped in from the continent. But with Sussex Red wine now available, it’s time to bring this festive tipple closer to home.

MULLED PINOT NOIR FROM OUR MAKERS MARKET

At our recent Christmas Makers Market, we used our Pinot Noir 2022 in the Mulled Wine to make a particularly glorious incarnation of this spiced delight. our red Pinot is an exceptional example of English still wine and the flavours and intensity of fruit from the vintage lends beautifully to the mulling.

We had many requests for the recipe. So here it is! Our recipe is closer to a German Glühwein, but with a few Artelium twists.

ENGLISH MULLED WINE RECIPE

METHOD

INGREDIENTS

STEP 1

Put the wine and sugar into a large pan on a low heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved.

STEP 2

Add the Orange and Lemon peel, plus the juice of the Orange. Then add the Cinnamon, Star Anise, Cloves, Nutmeg and a Bay Leaf. Leave to simmer on a low heat for 10 mins.

STEP 3

Turn off the heat and cover, leaving the wine to infuse. We like to leave the Wine overnight but recommend a few hours as a minimum.

STEP 4

When you like to serve, heat the wine but do not boil. Serve in mugs or heatproof glass with a slice of orange.

  • 750ml bottle of Red Wine – we use our Pinot Noir 2022. However, this recipe would also work with a super-market alternative.

  • 1 large cinnamon stick, or 2 small ones

  • 5 Star Anise

  • 15 Cloves

  • Half tsp of ground Nutmeg

  • 1 Bay Leaf

  • 2 Orange– 1 for peel & juice, the other for serving slices

  • 1 Lemon – peel only

  • 4 tbsp caster sugar (or more if you prefer sweeter style)

PINOT NOIR 2022

Deep ruby colour and depth of flavour on a ‘crushable’ frame – tiny natural spritz on first opening adds charm. Red and black cherry, baked plum and damson fruit forms a concentrated core. Layers of rolling tobacco, star anise and ginger spice. Great concentration on palate.
