Behind the Name: ARTELIUM

Artelium East is located in the heart of Sussex near  Ditchling, a village with a heritage of arts and crafts.

Ditchling was home to renowned craftsmen such as John Skelton the sculptor and Edward Johnston, famous for iconic typography.

Our  brand and logo playfully references the art of typography, woodcarving and sculpture, celebrating craftsmanship with a distinctly modern twist.  

 One question that we get asked most frequently is “What does Artelium mean?”…

The journey to creating our name started with ‘Atelier’, another name for an artists studio or workshop. However after much consideration and several variations we settled on creating our own word… ARTELIUM.

ARTE noun

The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

-IUM suffix

/ɪəm/

Used to indicate the setting where a given activity is carried out. e.g. atrium, aquarium, emporium, planetarium, terrarium.

A combination of ‘arte’ and ‘ium’, our name ARTELIUM therefore signifies a place for the enjoyment of art, a place to celebrate our ever-growing collective of artisans; the viticulturists, the winemakers, the artists, designers and creatives.

Our vision is to curate a space where exceptional art and premium wine converge harmoniously, in the beautiful landscape of the South Downs. We host regular exhibitions throughout the year and already have one fantastic local maker in residence, hosting regular workshops and short courses - Skelton Workshops.
