Ella Porter & Laurence Moracchini
Terroir & Texture
November 2024
‘Terroir & Texture’ celebrated the intersection between contemporary craft and natural materials. This mixed exhibition featured the work of wood artisan Laurence Moracchini and ceramicist Ella Porter. Together, these two artisans created a contemplative conversation between wood and clay.
Both Ella Porter and Laurence Moracchini’s work respond to the natural materials of clay and wood. This collaboration with nature mirrors a winemaker’s partnership with the vineyard and terroir. Each harvest is an almanac of that year’s weather; the creation of wine reflexive to the fruit, the winemaker balancing and enhancing the flavors and qualities produced by a vintage. Similarly, Porter and Moracchini respond to the qualities and imperfections of their materials, relishing accident and the unexpected.
Motley Wild: The Baron Gilvan & Guests
September 2024
This vibrant mixed show explored wildness and play, featuring 4 bold artists: The Baron Gilvan, Gary Goodman, Tim Copsey, and Julian Brown. These artists share a strong, askant visual language which uses humour, narrative, bold colour, duality, and playful forms. This exhibition coincided with the launch of Artelium’s limited-edition Artefact #7,8 & 9, with labels designed by The Baron Gilvan; wines as vivid and dynamic as the accompanying show.
The title ‘Motley Wild,’ was inspired by the wild-ferment Artefact wine of the same name. The wine combines pinot gris, pinot noir, and chardonnay in equal parts, allowing the grapes to ferment naturally, creating a zingy and expressive wine. Similarly, this exhibition brought together this striking group of artists, combining them to create a riot of colour and play.
Walter Bailey
Wood, Earth
May 2024
A solo exhibition from sculptor Walter Bailey exploring the interconnectedness of life and landscape.
Alongside large-scale sculptures, interior pieces and a selection of woodblock prints, this exhibition featured a new permanent addition to the Artelium estate, Wood, Earth Hoop. Using oak from pruned and storm-felled branches, Walter created this bespoke piece in response to the vineyard. This large circular structure provides an organic frame for the surrounding vines and views of the South Downs. This exhibition coincided with the launch of Artefact #6, which featured labels designed by Walter, inspired by both the wine and Wood, Earth Hoop.
Will Nash
Futures Past
May 2023
A solo exhibition from Sussex artist Will Nash featuring sculpture, models and screen-prints inspired by ongoing explorations of mathematical forms and their relationships to one another. Will’s sculpture ‘The Chevron’ was the first permanent sculpture to be installed in the Artelium sculpture garden. He collaborated on the labels for Artefact #4 & Artefact #5, resulting in a series of original screen-prints sold exclusively through Artelium.
Isobel Smith & The Baron Gilvan
When Painted Birds Laugh
September 2022
A collaborative exhibition from sculptor and performance artist Isobel Smith and painter The Baron Gilvan. Inspired by William Blake’s Laughing Song and The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski, the exhibition included painting and sculpture presented in the tasting room and performance across the estate.
Judith Alder
String Theory and Other Things I Don’t Understand
May 2022
A solo exhibition from local artist Judith Alder based around ’30 works in 30 days,’ an international project which asked its participants to create line drawings in black ink on white paper with a continuous looped line.
Judith is interested in how science, nature and technology collide in today’s world, creating work which explores the evolution and mutability of form. Alongside the exhibition Judith worked on the labels for Nature Series Cuvée 2017, a collaborative wine project between Artelium and Vagabond, creating line drawings based on the molecular structure of Light, Soil and Water, key elements in the wine making process.
