Artelium Launches ‘The Artefact Prize’ with The Sussex Contemporary

We are so excited to be collaborating with The Sussex Contemporary, the county’s largest artist open call, on a new award called The Artefact Prize.


The Artefact Prize will be awarded to an exceptional artist or maker showing in The Sussex Contemporary 2024 exhibition ‘The Sussex.’

What does the winner receive?

  • The opportunity to create label designs for a future Artefact wine (Artelium’s range of small-batch artisan wines)

  • A £2,500 commission for up to 3 related artworks

  • An exhibition opportunity at Artelium Wine Estate

  • A case of Artefact wine adorned with your designs

All artists selected for The Sussex exhibition will be eligible for the prize.  

How do I enter?  

To be eligible for The Artefact Prize, artists need to apply to The Sussex Contemporary Open call and be selected to be part of The Sussex exhibition.  

The deadline for entries is the 31st August 2024.  

The winner will be announced on the 11th October at the exhibition private view.

About The Sussex Contemporary

The Sussex Contemporary is an organisation which celebrates and promotes contemporary artistic excellence. Their yearly open calls are an opportunity for both established and emerging artists to be part of a fantastic exhibition celebrating the best in Sussex artistic talent. This will be their third exhibition, the last two years being hugely successful and attracting over 15,000 visitors. This year’s exhibition theme is ‘Duality’ and will be hosted in Newhaven’s The Marine Workshops.    

What is the entry criteria?

Below are the entry criteria for The Sussex Contemporary Open Call:  

  • The Sussex Contemporary is open to entries from both professional and emerging Sussex artists of all disciplines 

  • Submissions can only be accepted from artists that were either born in Sussex, educated here, or who currently work / live in the county   

  • Submissions can be in any media  

  • Submissions should respond to this year's theme ‘duality’  

  • Submissions go before a panel of independent judges who choose on the merit of the work alone (they don’t see the artist’s name)  

  • There is no size limit to submissions, but work must be ready to hang and presented to a gallery standard  

  • The maximum weight limit of work to be hung is 20kg  

  • The maximum weight limit of 3D and sculptural works is 100kg  

  • The entry fee for the open call is £15 and there is a maximum of three submissions per artist  

The exhibition runs from the 12th – 27th October.
